Senior outside hitter Joaquin Acosta was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week on Wednesday.

"It was nice to be honored like that," Acosta said. "But what I really want to do is win."

This is the second time this season Acosta has been named conference player of the week. He also received the award in January, when the team swept then No. 12 University of Southern California.

Acosta helped lead the men's volleyball team to consecutive sweeps of UC Santa Barbara last weekend, in his final regular season home games. A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Acosta led the Cougars with 36 kills, averaging 6.0 kills per game. Acosta posted a blistering .555 average, connecting on 36-of-53 attempts. Acosta was also credited with seven blocks, six digs and one ace against the Gauchos.

Acosta is second on the team in kills with 357, behind senior opposite hitter Mike Wall, which is also good enough for twentieth in the country.

"It's great to coach guys like Joaquin and Mike," Coach Carl McGown said.

The team plays its next four matches on the road at UC San Diego on April 9 and 10, before ending the regular season at No. 3 Hawaii on April 12 and 13.
