The BYU men's and women's diving teams will host the BYU Diving Invitational in the Richards Building today, Dec. 5 and Saturday, Dec. 6.
The schools competing against the Cougars at the meet will be the University of Utah and the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
The BYU teams are coming off of impressive performances at the Speedo Cup, which took place in Long Beach, Calif., before the Thanksgiving break. At that competition, the No. 19 BYU men finished second, while the women finished fourth.
The only team to finish in front of the men's team was No. 3 Stanford. Meanwhile, the women came in behind Oregon State, UC San Diego and UC Irvine. But they were able to finish in front of conference rivals Colorado State and Air Force.
Because of the long layoff between meets, diving coach Keith Russell said this should be an interesting competition.
"I'm looking for our NCAA qualifiers, Justin Beardall and Scott Randall, to carry their momentum into this competition," Russell said. "I expect us to do well."
However, he also said the Utes have a few male divers that should provide the Cougars with some tough competition.
For the women's team, Russell said UNLV has an excellent diver, but he expects BYU teammates Rachelle Routsong and Mindy Jones to perform well.
While the Cougar diving team is competing here in Provo, BYU men's swimmer Zach Anderson will race at the US Open Swim Meet. He will attempt to make his Olympic qualifying time in the 400 free. Anderson is the only BYU athlete competing in that meet.
Because of his impressive performance at the Speedo Cup, Anderson was named Mountain West Conference Men's Co-Swimmer of the Week. Wyoming junior Scott Usher shared the honor with him.
Anderson earned second place in the 1650 freestyle and third place in the 500 freestyle.
This is the first time Anderson has won the swimmer of the week award. He joins two other Cougar swimmers and one diver as recipients of it this season
The BYU Diving Invitational will be both the men's and women's teams final competition this year. The teams next meet will not be until Jan. 2-3 at the All-America Diving Invite.
