Jack Sprat glides on to the deck of Port Charles with a smirk and a rickety walk; Eliza Swine waits for love and adventure, a Beanie Baby hung tightly around her neck; meek and lowly Will Doolittle stands by with a shovel for his sword. If this sounds fishy, that is because it is. The "Curse of the Black Pearl" has been left to the sea, while "Pirates of the Caribbean: Yo ho ho and a Bottle of Fun" is taking its turn at the plank.
The story that was a $305 million dollar box office success has sailed its way to become an original musical parody. The Desert Star Playhouse, known for its satirical and musical comedies, has taken on the tale as their latest capture, promising plenty of laughs, and danger only to those who fail to buy tickets.
"People love seeing comedy that they didn't see in the movie," said Scott Holman, the director of the play. "Pop culture is so relatable to everyone, that it's fun to take a known story and hit people over the head with it."
Bronwyn Teague, who is in charge of lighting design, agrees.
"We basically make fun of everything," she said, making sure to acknowledge that it was all in good fun.
Desert Star Theater produces original satires like "Pirates" on a year round basis, and all the material is written and rehearsed. The script, however, cannot always account for what the audience might say and do. As a result, improvisation is encouraged.
"There is always a certain amount of improvisation," Holman said. "We don't mind if people shout out something in the middle of the play. The audience reaction is everything."
Laura Lewis, the Box Office Manager of the Theater, also places great importance on the audience. When asked what people can expect when they come to the Theater, she said a lot of participation with the actors, and a great time.
"It's hilariously funny," she said. "People laugh until their stomachs hurt."
Even with the Theater's success, the writers and director realize they need to keep the material updated.
"When you do parody, you have to keep it fresh," Holman said. "Even if it means you have to change the show."
The tone of the theater only adds to the fun, laugh-out-loud style of the play. With the audience arranged in cabaret seating, it has a laid back, comfortable feel, with waitresses bringing food to the table in the middle of the show. Essentially, it embodies an atmosphere of celebration, which is exactly what the Theater wants.
"People love it," Holman said. "They already know what to expect - every nuance. We want it to feel like we're all at a party, laughing together and having a good time."
The Desert Star Theater's next productions include "Forever Joseph ... and his Amazing Forever Plaid Dreamcoat" and "My Big Fat Utah Wedding."
"Pirates of the Caribbean: Yo ho ho and a Bottle of Fun" runs through March 20. Call 801-266-2600 for reservations and more information.
