It may have red and blue diving off the diving boards on Friday and Saturday at the BYU Diving Invitational, but standing on the highest tiers of the podium, it was all blue.

It's been two weeks since the BYU women's diving team had a meet, but they were still able to take the top two spots away from their guests, UNLV and Utah, in all three events: the 1-meter, the 3-meter and the platform.

"I think overall we did really well," diving coach Keith Russell said.

Friday started with the 1-meter springboard competition. Freshmen Kristin Pitt and Angela Nelson took the top two spots in this competition, scoring 276.5 and 270.45 in the event.

On Saturday, the Cougars again competed, this time starting with the 3-meter springboard. The final was made up of five BYU athletes and three UNLV competitors. After 11 rounds of competition, Nelson won the event with a score of 458.10. Coming in second was junior Aubrey Low, who got 448.25. The Cougars also had Pitt among the top athletes with her score of 401.95, allowing her to stand on the podium at the fourth-place spot.

Saturday ended with the Cougars taking the top two spots in the platform after five rounds of competition. Low won this event with a score of 197.5, and Nelson followed in second with 179.5.

This was the final diving competition for the Cougars this year.

On the men's side, BYU fell just short of sweeping the 3-meter springboard competition.

Trying to follow suit after the women's team took first and second in the 1-meter springboard competition earlier in the day Friday, the men couldn't hold on to the top spot and ended up finishing second and third overall.

Senior Scott Randall held the lead after the prelims Friday morning, but didn't quite have enough to edge the returning Mountain West Conference 3-meter springboard champion, Sterling Richards of Utah.

Randall finished the competition with a score of 471.15 behind Richard's score of 497.2. Bryce Engstrom of the Cougars took the third spot with a score of 442.80.

"I was a little disappointed with the outcome in the 3-meter," Russell said in a news release, "but I think we did well."
