The ninth-ranked BYU lacrosse team finished out a three game road trip with an 11-5 win over Georgia Tech University Monday, Mar. 20, 2006, giving them a 2-1 record over the weekend.
In a game of scoring streaks, the Cougars finished off the Yellow Jackets with a five-goal burst in the fourth quarter.
"Wow, we barely got by a team that wasn't ready for us," BYU head coach Jason Lamb said. "Our first and fourth quarters were really good, but the second was average and our third quarter was the worst of the weekend."
In the win, Marshall Kay, a transfer from national champion Herkimer Community College, led the Cougars with four goals.
"Marshall comes with a great pedigree and other teams are going to be aware of that," Lamb said. "He draws the best defender from all of our opponents and still leads our team in points. He is great at getting his goals in the in-between moments and when it's least expected."
The young Cougars have emphasized consistency and confidence this season. That confidence got a boost with a win over national power Florida State Seminoles 11-8 Saturday. The win avenged a BYU loss in last year's national semifinal game to the Seminoles.
The Cougars were held scoreless in the first quarter, but played their best two quarters of the season in the second and third, Lamb said, scoring five goals in each period.
BYU was able to hold off a fourth quarter rally by the Seminoles to secure the win.
Kay again led the Cougars in scoring, finding the net three times, as did Josh Austin.
"Everything we do on offense goes through [Kay and Austin]," Lamb said. "It's been so far so good in the last little while."
Despite the victory, BYU suffered a devastating loss when captain and All-American defenseman Cameron Archibald went down in the fourth quarter of the game with a torn ACL. Cameron will miss the rest of the season.
"The players responded well in his absence, but that's a huge blow," Lamb said.
In the first game of the East coast swing, the Cougars lost 8-7 to No. 8 Wesleyan University.
Kay, Dan Cole and Drew Shumway all scored two goals a piece to lead the Cougars in the loss.
