The LDS Top 5 Charts, written by Chad Daybell

From Shawn Bradley to Gladys Knight, from the invention of the television to the founding of Marriott Hotels, the world is full of famous members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as emphasized by in the new book, “The LDS Top 5 Charts.”

LDS author Chad Daybell has compiled lists of top fives which curious readers can use to find out stats from the top five BYU football teams to the top five most famous LDS inventors.

The book also has church-related statistics, such as the countries with the highest percentage of LDS members (Tonga leads the pack) and the five longest tenures of church presidents (President Gordon B. Hinckley receives an honorable mention for being on track to make the list soon).

The book also includes names that both older members and younger ones will recognize, from the Osmonds to Steve Young.

Daybell, who graduated from BYU in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in communications, has previously authored 18 books. Some of the more recognized titles include nonfiction LDS work, such as “The Youth of Zion,” and fictional works such as “Chasing Paradise.” However, in the introduction of his new book, Daybell wrote that he’s previously written doctrine-related books, but this isn’t one of them.

“When I was attending BYU in the early 1990s there were always students speculating about which celebrities were LDS,” Daybell said. “Since that time, I've felt there was a need for a Who's Who book that people could use to identify well-known church members, particularly current celebrities. So I finally wrote it myself.”

The book includes lists of LDS celebrities such as Eliza Dushku, who played Faith on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and Ken Jennings, who won the nation over by winning more than 70 games of “Jeopardy.” The book also lists the top five LDS novelists, the top five Billboard 100 songs by LDS artists and the top five well-known LDS businessmen.

Daybell said he wrote the book with college-aged students specifically in mind.

“To be honest, after my own experiences at BYU, I purposely selected categories that would most appeal to people in their 20s who pay the attention to the entertainment and sports world,” hesaid. “This isn't a book that my grandparents are very interested in, but my brothers and friends really are enjoying it.”

Each item on a list includes a small commentary by the author, further explaining the name or idea and why it made the list. And, just in case students feel that a category or a celebrity was overlooked, the end of the book offers them the opportunity to send in their own ideas for future editions of the book. Daybell said the actor and actress ratings have been highly disputed, and he plans to break them down into television and movie categories in the next edition.

“That's where reader suggestions will be helpful as I work on the next edition,” Daybell said.

The book is available for $9.95 at Amazon.com and all LDS bookstores, including autographed copies at the BYU Bookstore and Seagull Book. A complete list of Daybell’s works can be found on his Web site, cdaybell.com.
