Theft

July 5: A bike was stolen from a BYU grounds employee shortly after he had removed the bike from his work truck. The bike was a blue and silver suspension mountain bike valued at $300.

July 6: A vehicle was broken into in lot 51 near the MTC. The owner of the vehicle left the window down about an inch. When the owner returned, a Toshiba laptop, four CD's, a Franklin Covey Day Planner, a phone and an iPod charger were missing. Police determined the window had been pushed down far enough for the alleged perpetrator to unlock the door. The items reported stolen had an estimated value of $1272.

Ongoing Investigation

A student who admitted to removing bikes with abandoned claim tags on them from around campus called University Police to see if removing the bikes was legal. The student, who thought the tags meant the bikes were abandoned and could be taken by anyone, was found to have 59 bikes in his possession. While some bikes were unlocked, other bikes had their chains and locks removed by the student. As of July 11, four owners have contacted the traffic office and claimed their missing bikes. All four of the bikes owners had their locks removed and the locks are valued from $10-30. Charges and restitution are pending upon completion of an investigation.

Harassment

July 6: A female student called police to report being followed throughout the Wilkinson Center by a suspicious male. The female student claimed that everywhere she went this particular individual was close by. Police confronted the male student who apologized and said he would stay away from the female student.

July 6: A female EFY participant told one of her counselors that a male had touched her. EFY counselors stayed with the girl until police arrived. The alleged male turned out to be a building supervisor doing security checks throughout the building. Police determined that no crime was committed because he had made no contact with the female EFY participant; he only touched the couch she was on.

Property Damage

July 5: Two students confessed to damaging a toilet in Helaman Halls using fireworks. The individuals were cooperative with police and have agreed to pay for the damages.

July 5: A student called police to report damage to his vehicle. When the student returned to his vehicle after class, he discovered several scratches on the doors on both sides of the car. The damage is estimated at $200.

July 6: Police were notified of pink graffiti on the south wall of B-64 located by the Nature Trail on Maeser Hill.

Disorderly Conduct

July 5: EFY counselors called police after BYU students reportedly hit EFY participants with water balloons. The alleged incident occurred on the basketball courts near the NCAA track. EFY counselors said just having police presence there was enough to defuse the situation.

Alleged Sexual Assault

June 30-July 1: A male BYU student made inappropriate advances on a female student during a study group off campus. The female reported the incident to University Police who took a report and then contacted the Provo Police Department.
