There are three actions young adults need to take to feel the spirit everyday of their lives, said Elder Henry B. Erying.
“My purpose is to teach you how you can reach that happy and glorious goal of eternal life,” Elder Erying said. “The key for each of us will be to accept and hold the spiritual gifts we have been promised by God. We are promised that you can receive the Holy Ghost after baptism.”
Elder Erying emphasized the importance of the Holy Ghost. Once member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are baptized they receive the gift of the Holy Ghost and can feel his power everyday. He discussed the requirements church members need in order to feel the Spirit in their lives.
Elder Erying addressed young adults ages 18 to 30 around the world Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006, at the CES fireside at the Marriott Center on BYU campus.
The importance of the Holy Ghost is that young adults may not be deceived. It is a gift given to church members so they can feel the spirit of truth and feel him as a comforter. Elder Eryring spoke of the three requirements needed to have the Holy Ghost sufficiently in their lives.
“It is possible to have the Spirit of the Holy Ghost sufficiently,” Elder Erying said. “What it will require will be different for every one of us, but for all of us there will be three basic requirements.”
“First, receiving the Holy Ghost takes faith in our Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son Jesus Christ,” Elder Erying said. ”You must be sure of your faith in the moment of crisis, which may come at anytime. Be unshaken in your confidence in that God lives.”
Elder Eyring also spoke of the importance of service. He spoke of the idea that through service church members are able to come closer to God and feel the Spirit.
“The second requirement for frequent companionship and direction from the Holy Ghost is to be clean,“ he said.
Church members can feel the Spirit by exercising faith and by praying. Through prayer young adults can receive the knowledge of what they need to repent to become clean and feel the companionship of the Holy Ghost.
The last point discussed was the importance of the need to have a pure motive to feel the Spirit. Young adults need to be in line with the Lord so they can have the companionship of the Holy Ghost.
The next CES Fireside will be held Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, with Bishop Keith B. McMullin, Second Counselor in the Presiding Bishopric, as speaker.
