This wedding jar in the "Seeking the Divine" exhibit at the Museum of Peoples and Cultures was used in the Hopi wedding ceremony.

Try something new. Avoid an awkward dinner date and take a special someone to the Museum of Peoples and Cultures this Friday to enjoy a hands-on experience making pottery of your own - you might just learn something too!

"It can be difficult on dates to have something to talk about," said Katie Criddle, promotions manager at the museum. "At the museum there is so much to talk about, which makes it less awkward."

The evening, cleverly titled "Culture Me Mine," costs $5 per person and will offer participants a tour of the museum, refreshments and an opportunity to make a creation of their own out of clay.

A museum staff member will help participants sculpt and shape their masterpieces and will provide instructions on how to take it home to bake.

"This will be something people can do with their hands," said Paul Stavast, interim director at the museum. "This way people can be more involved."

Those attending the date night can seek inspiration by looking at the vast collection of pottery in the exhibit, "Rise Up From Fragments."

One creative piece of pottery at the museum is the wedding jar located in the "Seeking the Divine" exhibit.

The jar is modern, created during the 20th century by a Hopi tribe and was used by a Hopi bride and groom during a traditional wedding ceremony.

The bride and groom drink Indian holy water from opposite sides of the wedding jar, symbolizing the act of two people becoming one.

"This was part of the bigger right of passage," Stavast said. "It's symbolic of the change of status of the individual."

Whether enjoying the impressive collection of pottery the museum has to offer or having fun creating your own masterpiece, join the museum either at 5:30 or 7:30 p.m. for a unique date night. Call 422-0020 to sign-up or just show up that night.

"The date will offer an opportunity for a couple to go beyond the average date and expose themselves to culture that goes beyond your typical BYU-bubble date," said Adrien Mooney, collections aide at the museum.
