The Museum of People and Cultures will host a party to celebrate both the opening of a new exhibit and Utah's Prehistory Week.

BYU's Museum of Peoples and Cultures will close streets to host a block party intended to celebrate both the opening of a new exhibit and Utah's Prehistory Week.

"It's just a chance for the community to come out and participate in what our museum has to offer," said Katie Criddle, promotions manager at the museum. "There's going to be stuff not only for kids to do, but students and adults as well. Plus, it's free."

The event, May 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature various vendors showing different activities like arrowhead making, rock art, Indian pinch pots, lace making and cordage. There will also be face painting, Hopi Indian games and free J-Dawgs served between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

"This is for everyone, including kids and families," said Tammy Messick, education coordinator at the museum. "It's a chance for them to learn about Utah's prehistory."

The museum has hosted the block party since 1993 and has seen crowds of up to 500 people.

"Over the past couple of years, it's been nice to see an increase in attendance and also to see more college students from the area come and participate," said Paul Stavast, interim director.

While participating in free Native American activities, participants can also take the opportunity to view the museum's new exhibit, titled "Touching the Past: Traditions of Casas Grandes."

The exhibit features pottery that offers insight to the traditions of the Casas Grandes culture. The contemporary and ancient pieces are well known for their colorful nature. They boast bold colors and maze-like patterns.

Staff members at the museum are excited to house this new collection because of its unique nature.

The collection comes from the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, in the Casas Grandes River Valley, at the site of Paquime and up into New Mexico.

"Developing the exhibition has been really amazing because it has given us hands-on experience in museum curation, exhibition, design and installation," said Heather Bullock, museum certificate student. "I'm looking forward to the community experiencing the culture of Casas Grandes through the creative efforts of the museum staff and grad students."
