New convert's shock

Halloween time can be fun, no doubt (costume parties, candy, friends, etc.), but what’s up with BYU’s dark Halloween paraphernalia? I wonder if God's got the Celestial Kingdom decked out with scenes of dead decaying humans, witches, witch havens, magic potions, sorcery, skulls, brews and haunted skeletons? But BYU seems pretty at home with it this year.

Maybe God will even include Satan in masterminding Heaven’s scariest haunted house – full of vile, sick and unimaginable horrors like “The Haunted Forest” promoted on the front-page of BYU’s newspaper last week.

Isaiah 5:20- Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

Think I'm taking this a little too seriously? I dare you to research the truth for yourself. Read Mormon 1&2, 1 Thess. 5:21-22, Ephesians 5:11,Romans 12:2, 2 Corinthians 6:14, 15, John 3:19-20, 1Thess. 5:22 and if you’re real brave, research Halloween’s actual roots. There’s nothing “light,” pure or holy about it.

Imagine Brigham Young and Joseph Smith visiting BYU bookstore, along with its large life-size wicked witch along with her wicked paraphernalia – presumably leftover human sacrifices.

Last time I checked, God wasn't real pleased with a witch (Exodus 22:18). So either God's saints have had their head in the sand a little too long or in their Harry Potter books – one or the other.

Don’t believe a word I’m saying until you prayerfully review above sources.

Boston Yankees

World Series Champs: Boston Yankees! Congratulations on winning the 2007 World Series! Unfortunately, the latest championship is the only good news for Red Sox fans.

If you are a Red Sox fan, I encourage you to stop reading and continue glorying in the recent championship because what follows is a sad realization that will torment your souls much worse than learning that Dumbledore was gay. Recently, I had the following epiphany: the Boston Red Sox are the same as the New York Yankees.

What? How could I make such a preposterous claim? How could I reason that the two teams that make up our country's greatest sports rivalry are one and the same?

The answer is simple. The Red Sox are guilty of the same crimes that cause baseball fans to hate the Yankees. Baseball fans know that if you do not like the Yankees, you hate them. You hate them because they are rich, you hate them because they buy their talent, and you hate them because their "fans" are merely fair-weather fans that boo and toss in the towel at the first sign of trouble.

Similarly, the Red Sox have had the second highest payroll for the past four years, the ten highest -paid players on the team were all acquired through free agency, and they have more bandwagon fans of any sports team in recent years. Has anyone else noticed the exponential increase in Red Sox apparel on campus?

Thus, while Red Sox Nation relishes the latest championship, let it be known that the Boston Red Sox are the same as the New York Yankees!

DU brave

It's good to see that in an era when so many -- including professors, ecclesiastical leaders, large chunks of the student body, and the Honor Code Office -- are profoundly opposed to the idea that wearing leggings or opaque tights under a too-short dress or skirt is in someway modest, the Daily Universe is still willing to make its position known. Who’d have thought such things could be endorsed as "fashionable" on this campus?

Thanks for your courageous stand and front-page photo. So what if a prophet of God commanded us on this campus to have a style of our own and not follow the world’s fashion? I guess the old saying yet has truth --

YBU: The Glory of the Y is Conformity.
