Sometimes finding a creative, original date is hard. But this Friday the BYU Museum of Peoples and Cultures is helping solve that dilemma.
The "Culture Me Mine" date night gives couples the opportunity to have a fun, interactive and even educational experience as they learn about pottery and create their own clay creations. The event runs twice, 6 and 8 p.m., Friday at The Museum of Peoples and Cultures, located at 700 N. 100 East. Tickets are $10 and can be bought in advance at the information desk in the Wilkinson Student Center.
The date night begins with a guided tour of the different pottery displayed in the museum.
"We go through a tour and get more of a background of the culture we have on display in our museum," said Tammy Messick, an education coordinator for the museum.
While the tour is informative, it is not intended to be like a class or lecture.
"We try to make it fun, interactive and entertaining as well as educational," Messick said.
After the tour, couples can enjoy light refreshments and try their hand at creating ceramic works of art similar to or completely different from the pots they've seen in the museum.
"I've even seen a coil toilet before," said Katie Criddle, the museum promotions manager.
Because the date is already planned and coordinated, the "Culture Me Mine" night allows couples to interact and have better conversation, Criddle said.
Tori Gardner, a volunteer at the museum, went to the last "Culture Me Mine" event and said she enjoyed the experience. She said she especially enjoyed the education and the hands-on aspects of the date. She added that making the pots look like the ones on display was harder than she anticipated.
"It puts you back into the ancient peoples' life and you really get to appreciate it," Gardner said. "People think it's really easy, but to make a pot that is good and looks like the ones on display is hard. You gain appreciation while learning."
