A BYU student who was killed Monday in a rush hour auto-pedestrian accident on University Avenue had just gotten engaged over the Christmas break.
Rebecca Blazzard, a 24-year-old art history major from La Grange, Calif., was on her way home from campus when a car failed to stop at a pedestrian crosswalk and hit her.
"She was the greatest and the sweetest. She loved everybody," said Shaun Woods, Blazzard's fiancée and a BYU student from Laguna Hills, Calif. "She always tried to make people happy."
Woods proposed to Blazzard over winter break.
"She was an angel," Woods said.
Those that knew Blazzard enjoyed her company.
"She was a funny girl," said Sara Crosby, a BYU civil engineering graduate who grew up with Blazzard.
Blazzard was the oldest of six children, and Crosby said, "She comes from a very sweet family."
The accident occurred Monday at 5:18 p.m. at 1820 N. University Ave. in front of LaVell Edwards Stadium.
Three lanes of traffic had stopped at the crosswalk to allow Blazzard to cross but a northbound Subaru in the easternmost lane failed to stop and hit her.
She was immediately rushed to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
The car was driven by George Bloch, a 66-year-old Park City resident. Charges have yet to be made.
There were no orange safety flags in the flag stands on either side of the street, according to Provo Police Capt. Cliff Argyle.
"None of the witnesses remember seeing her with a flag," Argyle said.
Pedestrians are advised to be vigilant when crossing busy University Avenue.
"We continue to encourage students and any pedestrians to be extra cautious and we encourage drivers to be extra careful at pedestrian crossings," said BYU spokesman Michael Smart.
The Provo Police Department also advises pedestrians to take care when using crosswalks.
"When possible make eye contact with the driver, make sure the vehicle is stopped before proceeding into the roadway," Argyle said.
