The hockey team split games this weekend, losing at home to Eastern Washington on Friday and beating Weber State in Ogden on Saturday.

Regionally ranked No. 2 Eastern Washington dominated play in the first and second period of Friday's game and won 9-3. BYU coach Doug Kimball said the team needed to be less picky in its shot selection.

"We need quicker release shots on power plays," Kimball said. "We had a lot of great chances; they just never went in the net."

The Cougars picked up their game in the last period and outshot the Eagles 21-9.

Cougar captain James Burkart said the third period set a good tone for the game against Weber State on Saturday night.

"Tomorrow's a new game," he said.

That third period energy did carry over to Saturday night and the Cougars beat Weber State 4-1.

Burkart said play improved from Friday night's game to Saturday's.

"We identified those small errors that we made on Friday night and we really focused on correcting them," Burkart said.

The Cougars will face regional No. 1 Colorado next Saturday in Provo.
