Jamba Juice has a well-kept secret. Each one around the world, including the one here at BYU, has an "underground" menu.
BYU's Jamba Juice has its "underground" menu indexed on ringed cards, some submitted by student workers. Usually, the workers at Jamba Juice are the only people who know what's on the "secret" menu, however, if a customer knows the name or recipe of the drink they want, they can order it without being charged extra.
The Jamba Juice in Hawaii has the most items on their "underground" menu. Barbara Lettich, store manager of the BYU Jamba Juice, said the "underground" menu started in Hawaii through customers and workers experimenting with the ingredients.
Although Jamba Juices have differences in their "underground" menus, there are a few recipes that they all share: White Gummy, Pink Star and Strawberry Shortcake. The White Gummy tastes like a white Gummi bear, and the Pink Star has the flavor of a pink Starburst. There are also variations of these drinks.
"My favorite is the Red Gummy," said Sofia Markee, a sophomore from Harrogate, England, who found out about the "underground" menu. "I really like Gummi bears, and it tastes exactly like a red Gummi bear. I feel like I'm eating it."
Other drinks on the menu include discontinued Jamba Juice beverages. Lettich said Jamba Juice has many reasons for having an "underground" menu.
"Mainly it's a speed of service issue," Lettich said, "It's faster to order off the menu, but Jamba Juice also always tries to upgrade to a better product and better quality, which is why some 'underground' items are just previous Jamba drinks."
Ashley Mortensen, the student manager at the BYU Jamba Juice, said that Jamba Juice caters to everyone.
"Everyone can get a custom-made drink if they want," Mortensen said. "You can have any substitutions or order any combinations of our ingredients. Some people have allergies or are diabetic, so Jamba Juice makes sure that our customers can get exactly what they need. All you have to do is ask the cashiers."
