Gymnastics
Solid performances throughout the night landed No. 29 BYU a sound 194.325 at the NCAA Regionals on Saturday night at Penn State University in University Park, Pa.
That posting, though, was not enough to send the Cougar squad to nationals. With tight competition, facing three top 15 teams, the Cougars earned a respectable fifth-place finish. No. 2-ranked Georgia won the meet with a 197.775 while No. 13 Denver finished second with 195.775. Host No. 20 Penn State took third place at 195.700 and No. 12 Auburn earned a fourth-place finish with 195.150. Iowa State came in behind BYU with an overall score of 194.200.
Softball
The Cougars won in extra innings, 1-0, when Angeline Quiocho hit a game-winning home run in the top of the ninth inning Saturday to complete the Cougars' sweep of No. 18 San Diego State.
Quiocho leads the team with 13 home runs on the season. Christina Gwyn-Trice recorded the win, throwing a nine-inning shutout.
Women's Track
Seven BYU athletes finished in first place at the Tom Botts Invitational in Columbia, Mo., on Saturday.
Sophomore Stacy Slight won the 1,500 meters (4:40.38), senior Angela Petersen won the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:05.00), freshman Mindy Robins won the 100-meter hurdles (14.04), senior Nicole Rasmussen won the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.45), sophomore Kindy Longmore won the 200 meters (25.33), junior Ashley Payne won the high hump (5-05.00) and sophomore Madara Dzalbe won the triple jump (38-06.75).
Women's Tennis
Just one day after suffering their first Mountain West Conference loss of the season, the No. 38 Cougars dropped a close 4-3 match to No. 55 New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. With the loss the Cougars fall to 13-10 on the season and 5-2 in league play.
Men's Tennis
After a thrilling doubles point win, the Cougars lost four of six singles matches, getting edged 4-3 by in-state rival Utah on Saturday. With the loss the Cougars fall to 14-11 on the season and 2-4 in Mountain West Conference play.
Women's Golf
The Cougars proved their strength and skill as they won the Roar-EE Invitational — their third straight victory this season. Junior Natalia Jimenez led the Cougars throughout the Mamaroneck, N.Y., tournament and won the individual competition with an overall score of 229 at 16-over-par.
Four BYU golfers finished in the top 10. Senior Juli Erekson shot a 4-over-par 75 in round three to help her finish in second place, just four strokes behind Jimenez. Sophomore Daphne Vines finished in sixth place and freshman Jade Bollinger followed as she tied for 10th place.
Baseball
Kasey Ko smashed a grand slam to give BYU its first lead in an 11-7 victory Saturday afternoon over Washington.
Ko’s slam put BYU up 8-6 in the six-run eighth inning and snapped a three-game skid for BYU as it improved its record to 15-20. The Hawaiian junior’s blast was one of three over the fence for the Cougars.
Men's Track & Field
BYU discus thrower Leif Arrhenius unleashed the longest throw in the nation at the Tom Botts Invitational in Columbia, Mo., on Friday afternoon.
Arrhenius’ throw of 207 feet 1 inch qualifies him as the fifth-best thrower in BYU history. His throw was more than two feet farther than Liberty’s Clendon Henderson’s mark of 204 feet 3 inches, the previous best mark in the nation.
