Overcoming Pornography Requires Early Prevention

"Pornography: Satan's Snare," was the title of the Women's Conference workshop given on Thursday by Jill C. Manning and Jeffery Robinson. The presenters advised women what resources and principles have been the most successful in helping individuals and families affected by pornography addictions and in preventing pornography addictions.

Manning, a family and marriage specialist, focused on the prevention of pornography and Robinson, a psychotherapist, focused on specializes in pornography and related family issues.

Based on Manning's experience, most men become involved in pornography between the ages of 7 to 13.

She suggested families should create a media plan and stressed the importance teaching youth the "importance of their bodies, healthy sexuality and marital intimacy."

Robinson agreed. He said "If we are ever going to win the war with pornography it will be through prevention."

Robinson directed his remarks to those who are already involved with pornography. He listed motivation, technique and attitude as three keys to overcoming such an addiction.

Robinson said those who struggle the most are those who are "most critical and upset with themselves."

Sherry Scott of Salem, Utah said she found this session to be one of the most helpful of the conference, because it was more "real" than the others.

"This is more real life than the other topics," Scott said. "Pornography is so much more real today."

Manning and Robinson compiled a list of helpful resources. The list will eventually be available online at http://ce.byu.edu/cw/womensconference/.
