Entering the last home series of the season, the Cougars look to celebrate senior day in a peculiar fashion: with no seniors.

Having struggled through a tough season, this young team hopes to finish strong in their last home series of the season against Mountain West Conference foe San Diego State University.

With a roster that boasts 24 underclassmen and only 10 juniors, BYU has had to rely on younger players. Sophomore Sean McNaughton leads the team in hitting with 13 homeruns, 47 RBIs, 57 personal scores, and a solid batting average of .361.

However, inexperience among the pitching staff has been blamed for much of the team's inconsistency.

"We're a long ways away," coach Vance Law said. "We don't have the depth right now in our pitching staff. We just don't strike very many guys out."

With only two junior pitchers on the team, lack of college game experience among the bullpen has led to the Cougars allowing nine runs per game.

"Youth is a factor, but we're here at the end of the season. We've played nearly 50 games," Law said. "These guys have been out there for a long time and we're still making the same mistakes."

The Cougars (19-31, 7-11 MWC) hope to stay ahead of the University of Utah for fifth place in the standings, while SDSU (28-21, 14-7 MWC) is vying for first place with TCU and UNM heading into the conference playoffs.

The Cougars entered the series against the Aztecs on Thursday on a four-game home losing-streak, and has lost 10 of its last 11 home games.

Friday's game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., and the final home contest of the season will be played 1 p.m. Saturday.

BYU this season has already broken the team record for home losses since the opening of Miller Field in 2001.

With one more loss, the Cougars will also have the record for the most regular season losses by a BYU baseball team.
