Despite the rain and a 24-hour delay, BYU's men's and women's track and field teams scored high in many events at the Utah Twilight.

In 26 out of the 36 events the Cougars had at least one athlete in the top three.

The meet was delayed Wednesday because of inclement weather and finished Thursday. Only a few events were able to take place on Wednesday while most were postponed until Thursday.

University of Utah coach Kyle Kepler said even though they were short on volunteers Thursday, it was important to have the best conditions to allow the athletes to perform at their highest level.

Many of BYU's men's and women's track and field team did perform at a high level.

"We had a lot of great performances," Men's coach Mark Robison said.

Sophomore Kindy Longmore placed third in the women's 100-meter dash and second in the 200. Junior Nate Page placed second in the men's 100.

The women's team cleaned up in the 400-meter dash, where seniors Mary Bennion and Carlee Clark-Platt took first and second place respectively. Junior Angela Wagner had a regional qualifying time, as well as a season best, with a 2:08.32 in the 800-meter. Sophomore Drew Foster ran a lifetime best in the 800 as well, with a time of 1:50.99, good enough for first place. James Heiner took fourth, but also finished with a lifetime best in the 800.

In the 1500 the men took control winning first and second place by sophomore Kyle Perry and senior Tyrel Jensen. Junior Amy Fowler-Layne placed third in the 1500 for the women.

The men's team also took home first and second place in the 3,000-meter run by Brandon Hebbert and Taylor Thatcher, respectively.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Kathryn Beck, a junior, finished third with a time of 14.17. Junior Sandra Mazan finished second in the 400-meter hurdles. Sophomore Bryan Payne had a season best and qualified for regionals with a 51.97 in the men's 400 hurdles.

In the pole vault, Ashley McAllister tied for first and qualified for regionals with a 12-07.50. Freshman Alan Day took second with 15-01.00.

In the triple jump, Senior Kelly Marcroft finished first with a jump of 37-06.50

The Cougars dominated in the javelin throw, where sophomore Sarah Lancaster, freshman Rebecca Lee and freshman Erin Christiansen finished first, second and third, respectively. On the men's side, freshman Sean Richardson qualified for regionals and threw a lifetime best 207-10 and sophomore Matthew Johnston finished third with 185-03.

In the discus, freshman Winston Wilkinson also had a lifetime best and regionals qualifying throw, at 169-10

Freshman Krystle Forester took first place in the shot put with a throw of 45-00.50.

In the high jump, junior Ashley Payne finished second with a jump of 5-05.00.

In the relays, the men and women took third in the 4x100. In the 4x400, the women finished first and the men finished second.

Both men's coach Robison and women's coach Craig Poole said that the meet was a great "tune up" before the conference and regional meet. The Cougars compete next at the Mountain West Conference Championship in Fort Worth, Texas. May 14-17.
