Suspicious Behavior

May 12: A male was reported for walking suspiciously between cars in the MOA parking lot. The individuals who reported him said he was ducking down and acting strange. When officers went over and talked to him, the 30-year-old man was uncooperative. It was discovered that he had history of drug abuse criminal behavior. His claim was that he was at the museum with his family. Eventually the family came out but no one could explain why he was hiding, police said. Because of his criminal history and his uncooperative behavior, he was banned from the campus for 72 hours.

May 14 A male was reported for trying collect money by the Talmage Building. Police said he claimed he was with a Christian charity foundation. This was his second warning.

Shoplifting

May 19 A male student was arrested in the Bookstore. He was caught by a Bookstore employee stealing two food items. He received a citation for retail theft and was then released.

May 13 Bookstore floor walkers (students hired to catch the thieves) found a 64-year-old male from Pleasant Grove, stealing a book worth $30. Police said over the past two years he had bought books from the BYU bookstore, read them and then returned them to received cash back. The week before he was caught stealing, he was told to not return books after reading them. The man was arrested and issued a citation for retail theft.

Hazardous Condition

May 18 Someone called with safety concerns about a construction zone on campus. The officer who went investigated saw that the sidewalk had been cut out. He reported it to the Physical Facilities Department.

Theft

May 16 Someone called to report that the ducks and turtles were being stolen from the pond on the south end of campus. Police found that children were playing by the pond with the animals.

May 13 The owner of a bike which had been impounded for parking illegally came to claim it, only to find that it had been stolen from the impounded lot.

May 7 A women reported that her purse was stolen from the bookstore. Soon after the purse was reported missing, the charges to the woman's credit card began appearing. An officer investigated the matter and found the culprit, a former BYU student, through the credit card purchases and bookstore security camera footage.

Trespassing

May 11 At library closing time, a female student refused to leave the library. On May 14 she also refused to leave. The woman was given a citation and escorted out.

Property Damage

May 12 an 8-year-old boy was reported damaging BYU property by riding his scooter on the grass and damaging the lawn. The boy's mother came and took him home.

May 12 a vending machine was found with broken glass. Police identified who broke it. The individual tried to take an item from inside by banging on the class. They are responsible for paying for the replacement of the glass.
