Lee Cummard

BYU basketball received good news on Sunday as Mountain West Conference co-MVP Lee Cummard opted to return to the Cougars for his senior season.

Cummard entered his name into the NBA draft on April 25, but removed himself from consideration just one day before the draft deadline.

Unlike fellow teammate Trent Plaisted, an All-MWC First Team center, Cummard opted not to sign with an agent. If he had signed with an agent, he would have been ineligible to return for his senior year.

"There's no doubt that I could be a pro, but right now I think it's best for me to stay in school and delay taking part in the draft until next year," Cummard said in a news release. "I felt good about the feedback I received from my workouts. The process was positive for me and I look forward to being part of next year's NBA draft and finishing out my college career at BYU."

During the last three years, Cummard has been a critical piece of the Cougar basketball team, offensively and defensively. Last season, he led the team in scoring, field-goal percentage, three-point percentage and blocked shots.

More importantly, Cummard has helped lead the Cougars to back-to-back outright regular season conference titles and invitations to the NCAA tournament.

Cummard worked out with the Houston Rockets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns and Chicago Bulls.

Third year Coach Dave Rose said several NBA teams showed interest in the junior guard.

"Lee got great feedback from these teams that watched him play," Rose said in a press release. "He took his name out because he is also really excited to come back and help us try to win another championship."
