Holiday Safety Tip

BYU does not allow fireworks on any BYU property to protect against problems considering the high-density population, risk of fire and most importantly risk of injury. BYU police ask people to cooperate and not bring any fireworks on campus.

Theft

July 3
An abandoned suitcase was found outside the Richards Building. The luggage was transported to the lost and found.

July 2
A BYU student was arrested, cited and released after stealing $11 of property ranging from combination locks to tennis balls and film from the BYU Bookstore. Upon questioningg, the student admitted to prior thefts.

July 1
A 30-year-old female visitor to the university stole $175 worth of clothing from the BYU Bookstore. The Springville resident was arrested, cited and released.

June 30
An 18-year-old student was arrested, cited and released for stealing a bottle of water worth $1.19. BYU has a zero tolerance policy for theft, regardless of the value of the goods. All theft will be charged as a Class-C Misdemeanor.

June 27
A young lady reported a missing bag. The bag was later recovered from the lost and found, but was missing several personal items, including a USB jump drive and gum.

June 27
Theft was reported at the Wymount Terrace Laundromat. It turned out that someone had accidentally taken the wrong clothes from the dryer. The clothes were returned and the report was dropped.

June 27
A radar detector worth $140 was stolen from the owner's car in the Wymount Terrace parking lot. The owner claims the car was locked.

Public disturbance

June 30
Police followed up on a report of people being loud at 11:30 p.m. at Wymount Terrace. The loud people were asked to be quiet.

Personal Safety

June 30
A man was seen dangling his feet over the edge of the roof atop the Spencer W. Kimball Tower. The man was asked to not dangle his feet over the edge for his own safety and he complied.

Drugs

June 28
Two juvenile offenders were arrested for marijuana possession and use in the Helaman Halls dormitories. The police received a call that someone smelled something suspicious. When the officer arrived he said he smelled something burning and a strong chemical smell. The young men attempted to deodorize the room with air freshener spray, but the officers were still able to make the arrest. The two juveniles were promptly dismissed from the EFY program and sent home.
