Max Hall is the best offensive player in the Mountain West Conference -- for the past two weeks at least.
After a near-perfect outing against UCLA, Hall was named the MWC Offensive player of the week for the second consecutive week. He led the Cougars to a 59-0 victory over the Bruins, completing 27 of 35 passes for 271 yards and seven touchdowns before being pulled from the game halfway through the third quarter.
Hall's seven touchdown passes tied the BYU single-game record held by Marc Wilson in 1977 and Jim McMahon in 1981, and his six first-half touchdowns were a new BYU record. Hall also broke the old Mountain West Conference record of five touchdown passes, which was held by several players, including the man Hall replaced at quarterback, John Beck.
"I think Max's play will continue to speak for itself," BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "He carries himself with poise and maturity, without seeking to draw attention to himself, and has earned the respect of his teammates."
Hall is quick to deflect praise onto his teammates, and has been helped immensely by the consistent play of his receivers and offensive line, which has not given up a sack or a holding penalty through the first three games of the season.
"You don't want just one guy having all the success," Hall said. "We have an offense full of guys who can make plays and help us win, and that's what we want."
Through three games, Hall ranks third in the nation in passing yards (1095) and fourth in total offense (370), completions per game (33) and passing yards per game (365). He also ranks seventh nationally in passing efficiency (186.8). Hall boasts a 14-2 record as a starter for the Cougars, who hold the nation's longest current winning streak at 13 games.
Hall also racked up national honors Sunday, being named the National Offensive Player of the Week by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
