After falling behind 3-0 after one period, the BYU hockey team came back and defeated arch-rival Utah 7-6 Friday night at the Peaks Ice Arena.
Everything turned around in the second period, when the Cougars outscored the Utes 5-2 and ended the period tied at five.
"It didn't look good for a couple of places there in the game, but the guys came back," BYU head coach Stan Weiss said. "We can be a darn good team when we have the energy and play with the fire that we did in the second period."
BYU's Ben Shugart had two goals in the second period. Andrew Zanger, Jeremy Weiss and Coulter Knapton also had goals for the Cougars.
In the third period the Utes took the lead again, but BYU's Lee Johnson scored to tie the game 6-6. With 7:29 left in the game, Jeremy Weiss got tripped on a breakaway and BYU was given a penalty shot, which Weiss converted for the winning goal.
"It was just the right goal at the right time," Weiss said. "Any time we play the U of U there's always a lot of emotion and both teams always come up playing hard. We were fortunate enough to pull ahead, and it felt great to put it away."
