HELP International recently opened a new program in Fiji allowing BYU students to volunteer and complete internship requirements while helping those in need.

The Fiji program takes place during four months over the summer and does not require any foreign language experience. Students can volunteer in blocks ranging from six weeks to four months.

Volunteers are needed to teach and help with construction programs on the islands. Currently 25 percent of residents are living on less than one dollar a day, according to a HELP International press release.

“We really felt there is so much need in Fiji that’s really overlooked because most look at it as a tourist country,” said Ashley Rodgers, a HELP International country director.

Help International is a nonprofit organization which provides skills and resources to enable communities to improve their lives and help themselves, according to the press release.

Some of the teaching opportunities in Fiji include teaching about organic gardening, business and health classes.

“We will also be partnering with the BYU Food and Science Department to teach food-dryer construction that will increase food storage and food security for the most rural villagers,” Rogers said.

Construction projects will be held on various islands in Fiji to help repair homes and cities damaged in the recent floods.

HELP International will also help students conduct and manage their own volunteer projects while in Fiji. These projects will be tailored to meet the needs of Fiji residents as well as the student’s internship requirements.

The ability to conduct individual programs provides students with leadership opportunities through serving and teaching valuable skills to people in need.

“It’s great because it gives international experience and exposure, as well as personal leadership and management skills,” said David Palmer, a HELP International country director in a press release.

Students who are unable to attend the Fiji program are still invited to contribute.

“BYU students who can’t come serve with us this summer can get involved by offering to help us fund raise,” Rogers said.
