Thanks to the sunshine, many concerts change their location to the outdoors and for one particular venue, polyester suits and disco moves are in order as well.

On Memorial Day, the SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre will feature the band Stayin’ Alive, billed as the world’s No. 1 touring tribute band to the legendary Bee Gees.

“We wanted our 25th anniversary season to really start with a ‘wow’ factor,” said Adam J. Robertson, SCERA’s President and CEO, in a news release. “It’ll be fun and casual and of course there’ll be all that great Bee Gees music.”

Stayin’ Alive is a band comprised of Canadians Tony Mattina, Todd Sharman and George Manz. They have traveled all over the world, including stops in countries such as Russia and Malaysia.

The concert will feature hit Bee Gees songs like “Stayin’ Alive,” “Tragedy,” “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” and “Jive Talkin.” The concert will be split into two sections — the first set showcasing the group’s hits from the late 1960s up to now, and the second set bringing out the white disco suits and “Saturday Night Fever” video clips.

“I think right now 70s and 80s music is kind of hip in the college market as far as I know,” said April Berlin, the operations manager for SCERA. “It’s kind of making a comeback with all of that vintage and retro stuff. I think the disco era is just a fun era and the music is great.”

For audiences, the outdoor theatre provides a new concert experience.

“People want to be outside in the fresh air, there’s nothing more fun about being in a concert outside under the stars,” Berlin said. “It’s casual and fun, and that’s what makes this concert different. It’s not inside, so you’re not stuck in a seat — you can stand up and dance.”

General admission tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for children ages 3 to 11, seniors over 65 and students with ID. Patrons may bring a blanket or rent a chair for $1 on a first-come, first-served basis. Some reserved seating areas may still be available.

Tickets are available weekdays from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at the SCERA main office, 745 S. State St., Orem, by calling 801-225-2787, online at www.scera.org or at the box office on the west side of the SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre an hour prior to the event.
