Mermaids have been some of the most popular mythological creatures in history, and with the help of Disney, one particular red-haired mermaid has dazzled audiences since 1989 and continues today with a new spin.
The Covey Center for the Arts will host The Dance Maker Studio’s performance of “The Little Mermaid” on Friday, the story of a mermaid who will give up everything to be human and have the love of a human prince.
The show features a variety of dance styles, as well as music from the Disney movie soundtrack and the Broadway show that debuted in 2008.
“It has all different ages,” said Wendi Issacson, a BYU dance education and English graduate and the owner of Dance Makers Studio. “Our youngest dancer is two and the oldest are adults. If you’re familiar with ‘The Little Mermaid’ it’s really fun, and even if you haven’t seen it, it’s fun to see all the dances.”
The show will have a surprise guest playing the role of Prince Eric, as well as an unconventional King Triton.
“One interesting thing is that our King Triton is actually the president of the Utah State Senate, Michael Waddoups,” Issacson said. “He’s not doing any dancing though.”
For the finale dance, the Dance Makers Studio decided to feature some other dancers that have a special connection to the performers.
“My little girls have two grandpas and their dad that’s going to dance with them for the finale [daddy-daughter] number,” said Christiana Solomon, mother of four of the dancers. “My girls are really excited … to have their special partner. I think they [the men] feel like it’s a special time to spend time with their granddaughters or daughter.”
According to Solomon, the show will be a family-friendly environment and something fun for all ages.
“It’s really fun for families to come and see,” Solomon said. “I’m so proud of the progress that the girls have made this year … [and] the costumes are so modest and the music is appropriate. [The show] has a good atmosphere and overall good feeling.”
Performances begin at 4 and 7 pm. Admission is free. The Covey Center is located at 425 W. Center St. in Provo. For questions, call 801-852-7007.
